Pedestrian Crossing Busy Union Boulevard Intersection Struck By SUV

A pedestrian crossing Union Boulevard in Islip was seriously injured when he was hit by a sports utility vehicle.

A 31-year-old man was badly injured crossing Union Boulevard at Nassau Avenue when he was hit by a sports utility vehicle, said Suffolk County Police.

The man, 36, was crossing at the road's busy intersection with Nassau Avenue at around 9:45 p.m. Thursday night, July 4 when he was reportedly hit by a 2014 Nissan SUV traveling east on Union Boulevard, according to Suffolk County Police.

The man, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of his family, was taken in an ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore for treatment of serious injuries, according to Suffolk County Police.

The Nissan's driver, Jose Escobar, 46, of Central Islip, was not injured, said police. 

The SUV was impounded for a safety check, according to police.
