It happened Friday afternoon, Aug.14, in Brentwood.
Suffolk County Police Third Precinct patrol officers responded to the incident at the residence on Claywood Drive at approximately 4:40 p.m. on August 14. When a man involved in the dispute was being placed under arrest at approximately 5:30 p.m. Friday, his dog charged at the arresting officer.
The officer fired his gun at the dog and inadvertently shot the dog’s owner in the hand, according to Suffolk County Police.
The man was transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with non-life-threatening injuries. The dog died from the gunshot wound and the officer was uninjured.
The man was charged with first-degree criminal contempt in connection to the domestic incident. He is currently being treated at the hospital and is scheduled to be arraigned at a later date.
Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the incident.
