It happened just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25 in Nassau County.
An occupied 1999 Ford Explorer was stopped in the westbound HOV lane at Exit 48 in Plainview when the vehicle's rear was struck by a 2018 Kia Sportage travelling in the same direction, Nassau County Police said.
Upon impact the 1999 Ford Explorer caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames, said police.
The sole occupant of that vehicle, an 89-year-old Oceanside man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police. His identity has not yet been released.
The driver of the Kia Sportage a 36-year-old Miller Place man, was transported to a local area hospital for treatment of a head laceration and is listed in stable condition.
