Detectives said that an 83-year-old woman received a phone call at her North Bellmore home late in the afternoon on Friday, Aug. 2, from a man stating that her computer had technical issues and needed immediate attention.
Police said that the fraudster was able to convince his victim to purchase multiple gift cards over several days that amounted to more than $11,000.
According to investigators, the victim verbally gave the suspect the gift card codes for him to redeem over the phone. After not reaching any services, on Wednesday, Aug. 7, believing she may be scammed, the woman notified a family member, who proceeded to contact police.
Anyone with information about this crime should contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
The Nassau County Police Department reminds all residents to call 911 if they are contacted by anyone asking them to send money or gift cards. Nassau police said they would continue to educate residents about these crimes — specifically those targeting the elderly — at educational forums.
