The incident took place around 8:30 p.m., Monday, July 15, when the officer was driving northbound on Berry Hill Road in a marked vehicle when he was hit by a black Chevrolet Suburban traveling southbound, said the Nassau County Police.

The collision caused the police vehicle to leave the roadway and strike a tree. The operator of the suburban, Christopher Drabin, of Oyster Bay, fled the scene eastbound on McCouns Lane,  police said.

During the investigation, Drabin returned to the scene and was placed under arrest.

The officer was taken to an area hospital by Nassau County Police Aviation Helicopter 6 for treatment of multiple non-life threatening injuries,  police said.

Drabin was charged with DWI, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and multiple other infractions.

He is set to be arraigned on Tuesday, July 16, at First District Court in Hempstead.
