Alvarez, of Oceanside, died early in the morning on Saturday, June 29 from complications of colorectal cancer, a disease linked to the three months he spent at the World Trade Center towers after the terrorist attacks.
"We told him at the end that he had won this battle by the many lives he had touched by sharing his three-year battle," the Alvarez family said in a statement. "He was at peace with that, surrounded by family. Thank you for giving us this time we have had with him, it was a blessing!"
Funeral arrangements are pending.
