Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jr. said on Monday, June 28 that the men and women of his Office said goodbye to officer Candace Ogiejko, who was killed in a car crash while driving on Sills Road in Yaphank on Wednesday, June 23.
Ogiejko joined the Sheriff’s Office in January 2019 and just completed her second year on the force at the time of her death.
The funeral was held at St. Gerard’s Roman Catholic Church in Port Jefferson Station, with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard serving as pallbearers.
Police said that on the day of the crash, Ogiejko was driving her Dodge Ram north on County Road 101 in Yaphank when the truck veered forward the center grass median.
Ogiejko overcorrected, at which point she lost control of the vehicle, skidded across multiple lanes of traffic before coming to a crashing stop into the northeast corner of Old Dock Road.
According to police, the vehicle struck curbing, fencing, and several large trees before coming to a rest at approximately 8:40 p.m. on June 23. Ogiejko was pronounced dead at the scene by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.
“The entire staff of the Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of Correction Officer Candice Ogiejko,” Toulon said. “Correction Officer Ogiejko was just 25 years old and had her entire life and career ahead of her.
“She will be greatly missed by her loving family, as well as her extended family in law enforcement."
