A student from Accompsett Middle School in Smithtown tested positive for the virus and was last in the building on Thursday, Sept. 10, prompting the Department of Health to begin contact tracing to determine anyone who had come into close contact.
Over the weekend, more than three dozen students in the Plainedge School District were instructed to stay home from school after coming into contact with a student who tested positive for COVID-19 during a football game on Saturday, Sept. 12.
Plainedge Schools Superintendent Edward Salina, Jr. said that some students playing in the game shared food and water bottles on the field, forcing at least 40 students to enter quarantine.
"Those students have been directed to quarantine and not attend school effective immediately," Salina said in an email to parents on Sunday, Sept. 13 following the game. "Prior to returning to school, they will be required to produce a negative COVID-19 test result from a medical professional."
