If you don't agree with our choices, let us know where you go for bagels in the comments section. We are always on the hunt for great places to eat and love finding new spots.

But first, did you know that the bagel is nearly 500 years old and was first documented in travels from the Jewish families of Poland in the 1600s. They arrived in America with the huge Polish-Jewish immigration in the 1800s to New York where they became a huge success.

Nationwide, the bagel really didn't grab the attention of average folks until the mid-20th-century when mass manufacturing made it easier to transport those yummy round heaven of dough.

Here are our picks:

  • Wally's Bagels, 1137 Deer Park Ave., North Babylon: Wally's Bagel is family owned and operated since 1991. They are known for their oversized bagels and large portions. At Wally's when you order a dozen they throw in a couple for free.
  • A&S Bagels, 761 Hempstead Turnpike, Franklin Square: Probably one of the favorites on the island, A&S are known for being named the Best Bagel On Long Island by The Z-100 radio morning show (100.3 FM). In addition, they have been recognized as a top 20 bagel store in the U.S. Enough said. Check them out.
  • Strathmore Bagels, 1879 Lakeland Ave., Ronkonkoma: This bagel shop prides itself on being the "coolest" bagel shop around with not only awesome bagels but with a colorful atmosphere and even smooth Jazz on the speakers and an aquarium to enjoy while you chow down.
  • Bagel Boss, 1352 Peninsula Blvd, Hewlett: A true Kosher bagel store, the Bagel Boss is known for their crispy outside and chewy but not hard interior bagels that is a true gem for locals.
  • House of Bagels, 4 Vanderbilt Pkwy in Commack: They have been serving bagels on the Island for more than 30 years and are known for their awesome bagel sandwiches made with Boars Head meats and cheese.
