The incident took place in Nassau County around 7:15 a.m., Wednesday, April 18 on Girard Place in Merrick.
According to Nassau County Police detectives, a man was dropped off by a dark gray SUV in front of a Girard Place residence and entered an unoccupied BMW X7 that was left running.
The man then fled with the vehicle southbound on Girard Place. A short time later, the BMW was left abandoned and recovered by police in the westbound lane near exit 36 on the Long Island Expressway, police said.
The man is described as being Black wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black sweatpants.
The investigation is ongoing.
