As Stop & Shop continues its takeover of King Kullen on Long Island, two more stores are set to be shuttered due to “underperformance.”
King Kullen closed its Mount Sinai store on Thursday, June 20. Employees were reassigned to other King Kullen stores. Additionally, King Kullen will close its Lake Ronkonkoma store on Thursday, Aug. 22 followed by North Babylon on Thursday, Sept. 26, according to Lloyd Singer, a spokesman for King Kullen.
"Employees will be reassigned and no layoffs are anticipated. These stores were underperforming and the decision was made to close rather than renew leases that were coming due," Singer said.
Earlier this year, Stop & Shop announced its plans to buy the King Kullen, including 32 locations, five Wild by Nature organic supermarkets and the King Kullen corporate office in Bethpage.
"Stop & Shop continues to work through customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals relative to its acquisition of King Kullen Grocery Co., and the transaction has not yet closed," said External Communications Manager for Stop & Shop Stefanie Shuman.
