The Levittown location has been developing and installing everything from artificial intelligence-enabled cameras to interactive displays, a gigantic data center and more, suggesting, in the words of the corporation, “a retail future that seems like science fiction.”
This high-tech Walmart location has been dubbed the Intelligent Retail Lab (IRL), according to Business Insider. As the name implies, the location is designed to test the utilization of artificial intelligence in retail stores.
"Customers can be confident about products being there, about the freshness of produce and meat. Those are the types of things that AI can really help with," Mike Hanrahan, CEO of IRL, said in a statement on Walmart.com.
The Levittown Walmart is one of the busiest Neighborhood Market stores, officials say, with an inventory of more than 30,000 items.
In addition to making it easier for shoppers to find what they need, the technology is also intended to help employees work more efficiently and interact with customers more often, according to TechCrunch.
"We think it's something our associates will be excited about," Hanrahan said. "The technology has been built to improve associates' jobs, to make their jobs more interesting, to help them alleviate some of the mundane tasks. AI can enhance their skill set in a very rapidly changing world."
