Long Island Sound Tornado Confirmed During Tropical Storm Isaias Reports of a tornado touching down in coastal Fairfield County from the Long Island Sound during the height of Tropical Storm Isaias have proven to be accurate. The National Weather Service confirmed late Friday afternoon, Aug. 7 that a storm cell produced a waterspout off the ocean that made landfall as an EF-1 tornado in the Saugatuck section of Westport at about 1:40 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. SUV Lands In Saugatuck River After Crashing Off Road An SUV landed in the Saugatuck River on Sunday night after it went off the road and down an embankment in Westport. The driver, who was able to get outside the vehicle, escaped without injury in the incident, which occurred around 10 p.m. on Ford Road. The SUV was resting on its side in the river when the Westport Fire Department arrived at the scene. The vehicle was secured and stabilized by the rescue company.
