The primary activity for Pi Day was the highly anticipated memorization of digits of Pi. This year, senior Christina Gregis won the Digits of Pi contest by memorizing an amazing 2,450 digits of Pi. It took her over an hour to write out the 2,450 digits and more than 11 pages of paper. Gregis was able to break her own school record of 1,740 digits.
As part of the day, faculty and staff raised more than $600 from the sale of special “EPIC” Pi Day t-shirts. Proceeds will go toward the school’s Paul O. Eckhart Scholarship Fund. This scholarship was established in honor of a long time mathematics teacher and department chairman in the Carmel Central School District. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to the member of the high school graduating class who achieves the highest academic marks in the most challenging mathematics courses over their four years in high school.
Members of the math department congratulated Christina Gregis and all the students who participated. In addition, they appreciated the support for the scholarship fund.
