Maxwell Greene, of Brewster, was awarded $2,000, which he will apply to his tuition.

He is the son of Laura Greene, senior HR compliance specialist, who works in the Danbury, Conn., headquarters of Cartus.

Maxwell plans to pursue a degree in neuroscience, with minors in mathematics and computer science.

He has been actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America, Brewster Troop 1. He’s accomplished several 30 to 40-mile hiking and canoeing treks in the Adirondack Mountains, travelled through the Florida Keys on a high-adventure sailing expedition and completed National Youth Leadership Training.

He mentioned a meaningful experience in his application essay – repairing houses for victims of Hurricane Sandy.

Other community service has included preparing and serving meals at the Brewster Emergency Shelter Partnership, helping to distribute food at the Brewster Community Food Pantry and developing their website, brewsterfoodpantry.org.

Teachers describe Maxwell as an excellent communicator who can “rub elbows with the smartest staff members [in the high school] and hold his own.” He is someone who is inquisitive, never satisfied with a basic understanding – and he plays a “mean baritone horn,” too, according to a release.

Cartus Corporation annually presents three scholarships to children of its employees. The Danbury-based company with operations around the U.S. and globally, views the scholarship awards as an investment in future leadership and another way to support its valued employees.

A Cartus judging panel reviewed 20 applications, considering recommendation letters, student essays, transcripts and examples of leadership and community service activities.

Amy Meichner, Cartus vice president of Human Resources, said the judges agreed on the “extreme difficulty” of selecting winners from such a well-rounded group of applicants.

Two more scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each were awarded to Katie Reilly of Newtown, Conn. and Brittany Dinkins of Renton, Wash.
