The Carmel PBA issued an alert on Thursday to residents to show that “even police departments are not immune from receiving scam phone calls,” after receiving two calls from private numbers at their desk.
According to police, the callers stated they were providing computer tech support, stating that they received a warning that the department’s system needs technical support again. They then instructed them to go on Google Chrome and download “Supremo” a real company that allows remote access to others’ computers for business meetings.
Once the program is downloaded, police said that the caller will ask you to enter a password that allows the person access to the computer. The caller then requests that one pay for the service through an online bank at a very cheap bank. With the bank account number and password, the caller can then deplete the bank account, stating they overcharged and made a mistake, continuing to make that same “mistake” until one realizes it's a scam.
