Sheriff Donald B. Smith and police Chief Michael Cazzari said Wednesday that they both will be increasing drunk driver patrols and sobriety checkpoints as part of a statewide STOP-DWI effort.

“Celebrating our diverse ethnic heritages is a wonderful thing that we do as Americans, and St. Patrick’s Day is a great holiday for people of Irish ancestry to be sure,” said Cazzari. “But all too often the festivities can result in some people drinking too much and then getting behind the wheel of a car -- and that can result in tragedy.”

The joint effort will begin Thursday, March, 17, and run through the weekend, Smith said.

Police are reminding folks who plan to party to have plans for a designated driver or to take a taxi home.
