Putnam County Sheriff Donald Smith reported on Friday that 36-year-old Samuel Shuler and 28-year-old Leia Randolph were arrested earlier this month following a search of their home - which is across the street from the Mahopac Middle School campus - for suspected drug activity.
During the search, the Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Enforcement Unit and federal probation officers seized more than two pounds of marijuana, along with 9-millimeter pistol amunition, drug packaging materials, scales and an undisclosed amount of cash.
The federal probation officers became involved in the case because Shuler is currently under probation for a previous conviction on federal charges of conspiracy to distribute cocaine in 2004.
Police said that during the search, Shuler and Randolph were in the home with their 9-month-old son.
“In light of the illicit drug activity and the drugs found within the home, authorities charged the pair with endangering the welfare of a child,” Smith noted. Following the couple’s arrest, the child was turned over to a relative.
Both Shuler and Randolph were charged with criminal possession of marijuana, a felony and endangering the welfare of a child. Shuler was remanded to the Putnam County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or bond. Randolph posted $20,000 bond and was released on the day of her arrest. Each is due back in court later this year to answer the charges.
