TV Shows, Actors Give Putnam Big Presence On Small Screen

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- "That Girl" was from Putnam County. Or Brewster to be exact.

The 1960s ABC sitcom was about Ann Marie (Marlo Thomas), who moves from Brewster to New York City to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. 

Ann Marie's parents, Lew and Helen, ran La Parisienne restaurant in Brewster and many episodes were set there.

"That Girl" is one of several TV shows either based in the area or with actors from this region.

Elizabeth Montgomery, who spent her summers in Patterson, was famous for her show "Bewitched." Her estate in Patterson was later turned into Wonder Lake State Park.

Tom Welling, who played Superman on "Smallville," was born in Putnam Valley. 

Sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer who hosted numerous TV shows lives in Oscawana Lake in Putnam Valley.

"The Facts of Life," was set at a fictional all girls school in Peekskill, though the exterior shots of the school were of Pomona College in California. The school was modeled after St. Mary's School in Peekskill.

North Salem's David Letterman hosted a late night talk show for 32 years, while Matt Lauer, who lived in North Salem anchors "Today." 

Bedford's Donald Trump was a reality TV star with "The Apprentice." Trump, who is running for the GOP nomination for president, is feuding with Fox News, run by Garrison's Roger Ailes. Trump and Ailes will be meeting this week in an attempt to clear the air and settle Trump's latest criticisms of Fox News.
