Transformer Fire At Indian Point Poses No Danger To Public, Say Officials

This story has been updated.

BUCHANAN, N.Y. -- The Indian Point Unit 3 Energy Center in Buchanan was shut down safely after a transformer failure occurred at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday outside of the nuclear side of the plant, Entergy said in a press release.

"Unit 3 safely and automatically shut down as designed following a failure of one of two main electrical transformers at the plant around 6 p.m.," Entergy said. "The plant is currently in a safe, stable shutdown condition."

The unaffected unit, Indian Point 2 nuclear power plant, continues to operate at 100 percent power, Entergy said.

The cause of the failure, which was in the nonnuclear part of the plant according to CBS New York, is under investigation.

"Following the transformer failure an automatic sprinkler system, along with trained onsite personnel, extinguished the fire," the press release said. "There is no release of radiation to the environment because of this event, nor is one anticipated.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said the fire was reported at the transformer, with no injuries and no release at the Indian Point plant.

Emergency reports said a plume of smoke was seen in the air, but the fire never posed any dangers, according to Entergy.
