Putnam County is known for its beautiful lakes and waterways. However, if we don’t work together to protect them, it might be too late to save them.

Aquatic invasive species have been found in some of our lakes. I would like to caution boaters, in advance of this year’s boating season, that aquatic invasive species, such as Eurasian water milfoil, Asian clams, and zebra mussels, can be spread between waterways.

These are viruses that spread throughout the lakes killing fish and local plant life. To avoid spreading invasive species, please follow the guidelines in the steps set forth by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation:

  • Check
  •  Clean
  •  Drain
  •  Dry
  •  Disinfect

For details on each process go to the department’s website at: www.dec.ny.gov. Let’s all do our part to save our lakes for our children and grandchildren. Don’t be the one to bring aquatic invasive species to a Putnam County Lake.
