A Kent officer was traveling northbound on Route 52 at approximately 1 a.m. when a vehicle driven by John Keller, 40, traveling in the opposite direction, swerved into the other lane and nearly hit the police car head on, officials said.

After being pulled over, officials detected the smell of alcohol on Keller and conducted field sobriety tests. Keller reportedly failed the tests and was charged with driving while intoxicated. Those charges were elevated to felony status when it was discovered that Keller has two other pending DWI charges in Patterson and Carmel, police said.

Keller was remanded to the Putnam County Correctional Facility in lieu of $15,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 23, police said.
