Fiancée Angelika Graswald Charged With Hudson River Murder Of Kayaker

MONTGOMERY, N.Y. -- The fiancée of a kayaker reported missing in the Hudson River in Orange County was charged Thursday with murder, according to New York State Police.

State police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office announced the arrest of Angelika Graswald,  35, of Poughkeepsie and charged her with the murder of Vincent Viafore,  46, also of Poughkeepsie.

State Police responded to a report of a missing kayaker on the Hudson River on Sunday, April 19. At approximately 7:40 p.m.,  Graswald contacted Orange County 911 and reported that she Viafore, were kayaking on the Hudson in between Plum Point and Bannerman’s Island, several miles north of West Point. Graswald reported to 911 that Viafore’s kayak capsized due to choppy waters and she could not locate him in the river. 

On Wednesday, police investigators who had been pursuing leads in this case developed enough information to charge Graswald with intentionally causing the death of Viafore. Viafore's body has not been located.

Graswald was arraigned in the Town of New Windsor Court before the Honorable Richard W. Thorpe and remanded to Orange County Jail without bail.
