Whether it be fancy pants dining, humble Italian, creative Asian, spicy Mexican, a special burger, thin crust pizza or smoky BBQ, I'm always on the hunt for the new hot spot. Summertime in the Hudson Valley area offers a great opportunity to go out and take a drive.
Two places that opened in the last month both offer live music on weekends while offering fun and delicious foods in very different settings.
The Yankee in Fishkill, a casual venue that offers a great selection of cold craft beers and a menu of BBQ and burgers, is worth heading to Dutchess County for. Jimmy Eli, the owner of my favorite Cold Spring restaurant Riverview, has created this outdoor environment with great fun food and a stage for live music. Sitting outside under a tent sipping a Belgian White ale and noshing on a prime beef burger brings me back to the picnics I remember as a kid except the French fries are made fresh and the burgers are prime.
In Nyack, Sixty 5 on Main is the newest addition to this town’s culinary diversity. The beautiful, soaring space has been completely reworked and is designed for maximum comfort. It's also loaded with textural surfaces.
From a polished concrete bar to artistic tabletops and an outdoor deck, it's, quite simply, comfortable and special. Moshe Grundman, the chef, worked for several years at New York's Oceana and the international tapas and small plates menu has something for everyone. His Octopus Carpaccio is beautifully presented and loaded with Mediterranean flavors as are the Short Rib Fritters, Cauliflower with Apricot Tahini and house made ice creams to name just a few items. A well chosen wine list and live jazz in the dining room add up to a great night out.
