Looking to share the miracles achieved each day at Burke, hospital staff and administrators began to compile powerful patient stories, some they'd heard before and many they hadn't. "We picked the staff and employees' brains about people they've treated in the past few years," said Colleen Borrelli, director of corporate relations at Burke, and one of the project’s key organizers. After compiling a list of testimonials, "we decided to choose a patient representative of each of the different medical services we offer," she said. The stories they've shared are nothing short of astounding.
"One patient was a surgeon. He experienced a jet ski accident on vacation in the Bahamas and passed out in the water," said Borrelli. "He was rushed home where he experienced a massive heart attack and underwent an angioplasty, ultimately coming to Burke, unable to walk. Here, he began an intensive rehab regimen and was able to make a full recovery. In fact, today you can find him, once again, in the operating room."
This and other compelling and heartwarming stories are on display as part of their first-ever Faces of Burke exhibit. "Stories like this really illustrate how extraordinary Burke is," said Borrelli. "Patients leave here changed. We try and get people back to living the lives they love."
Faces of Burke will be open to the public from Nov. 16 to Dec. 30 in the Burke Hospital Lobby at 785 Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains. In early 2017, the photography exhibit will head into the community and will be displayed at Ridge Hill in Yonkers, the White Plains Library and elsewhere throughout the year.
