Visiting traditional gyms can be intimidating for the middle aged and older population. A commercial gym's loud music and the grunting and groaning of younger athletes can be off-putting for those looking for a less intense workout. People often feel uncomfortable, and "as a result, older gym-goers feel intimidated and don't stick with their goals," said Dr. Richard Sgaglio, senior administrator of marketing, communications and development at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains. It's this dynamic that inspired Burke to create a unique Fitness Center specifically for adults 40 and older or those that have a qualifying medical issue. The goal is to to provide these adults a comfortable and safe environment for exercise.
"The Burke Fitness Center is a unique opportunity for people to start or maintain a fitness program at a facility that understands their needs," said Sgaglio. "We've found that if people go in with realistic goals, and work with an organization that understands them, they’re more likely to stick with their resolution."
Based on an individual's health history and goals, participants will partake in a personal exercise program designed by certified personal trainers. Thanks to a specially designed computer system, trainers easily create a routine and monitor the results in real time. The Burke Fitness Center also offers classes such as pilates, Tai Chi and yoga for both members and those with special physical needs.
For Westchester residents looking to get in shape, regardless of their ability level, Burke is offering an additional three months free as well as waiving the enrollment fee for all new members for a limited time. For more information, call (914) 597-2805.
