Putnam Getting Set for St. Patrick's Day Parade

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y.  -- Get set to go green with the Northern Westchester/Putnam St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday, March 8.

According to the organizers, this is the third largest in New York and the 39th consecutive year this parade has taken place.

Buses start running at noon until 1:45 p.m. with line up at 1 p.m. The parade steps off at 2 p.m. sharp from he Mahopac Fire House (741 US Route 6) and follows eastbound along Route 6 (known this day as "Putnam County Savings Bank Boulevard").

You can park in the K-Mart Plaza at 987 US Route 6  and take buses to the staging area.

Among the participants: Area organizations, bands, clubs, patriotic groups, Irish dancers and, of course, the grand marshals, Peggy Evers Grant, from Mahopac, and Bernie Cummins, of Carmel.

Don't forget to set your clock ahead an hour. Here are the day's details:

9 a.m: Full catered Irish breakfast at St. John the Evangelist, 221 E. Lake Blvd., Mahopac ($15 per person).

10 a.m.: Irish concert featuring Ciaran Sheehan (Phantom of the Opera) and Maura Molloy at St. John's Church 

10:45 a.m.: Irish Mass with the Pastor Rev. Jarlath Quinn (Galway) followed by more tea and scones after mass.

12:45 p.m.: Pledge of Allegiance will be said in front of the 9/11 Memorial Gate in front of the Mahopac Firehouse.

2 p.m.: Parade step off from the Mahopac Fire House.

There also will be a St. Patrick's Day Parade Awards Ceremony at 7 p.m. Friday, March 20 at the Knights of Columbus Our Lady of the Lakes Council at 6318 Hall Fair Street in Carmel. Coffee, tea, soda and dessert will be served.
