The incidents all happened in Putnam County between Thursday, Aug. 1, and Saturday, Aug. 10, the Putnam County SPCA announced on Sunday, Aug. 11.
The first arrest was made on Thursday, Aug. 1 when SPCA detectives found a dog inside a vehicle with cracked windows while patrolling the Kobacker's Market parking lot in Brewster.
The inside of the car was reaching extreme temperatures amid 94-degree weather, officials said, adding that detectives then went inside the market and found the dog's owner, a 30-year-old Southeast resident.
The owner, whose name was not released, was brought to their car and charged with confinement of a companion animal in a vehicle during extreme temperatures.
The second arrest was made on Saturday, Aug. 3, when the abandonment of seven guinea pigs was reported to the SPCA. This led to authorities finding a large white box with the animals inside in the vestibule area of the Pet Blvd store in the town of Southeast.
According to the SPCA, detectives were able to look at surveillance video of a car pulling up to the front of the store. The footage depicted a man wearing a black neck gaiter mask and blue bucket hat placing the box in front of the store.
A suspect was then identified by using vehicle information, which led to the arrest of a 23-year-old Kent resident whose name was also not released. He was charged with seven counts of abandonment of animals, officials said.
The last arrest was made on Saturday, Aug. 10, when the SPCA received a report of a dog left inside a car in the ShopRite parking lot in Carmel amid sunny, 81-degree weather.
The car was found in direct sunlight with the dog inside, SPCA officials said, adding that the owner, a 58-year-old Mahopac resident whose name was also not released, was charged with confinement of a companion animal in a vehicle during extreme temperatures.
