On Tuesday, Jan. 20, Mikie Sherrill will take the oath of office as the 57th Governor of New Jersey. The Democratic governor-elect will be sworn in at noon, replacing Gov. Phil Murphy after two terms in office. Sherrill and her Lt. governor, Dale Caldwell, chose to hold their ceremony in Newark. Sherrill turned 54 on Monday and will be the first female veteran to serve as a United States governor. She lives in Montclair with her husband, Jason Hedberg. A Long Island couple who spent more than five decades together lost their lives side by side when their car crashed in their hometown over the weekend. On Monday, Aug. 25, Suffolk County Police identified the victims as Walter “Butch” Jakubowski, 83, and his wife, Margaret Jakubowski, 75, both of Ronkonkoma. A Wyandanch native who drowned at Sailors Haven on Fire Island is being remembered as a decorated combat veteran and kind soul who dedicated his life to service, friends told Daily Voice on Sunday, Aug. 24. Ishmoile Mohammed, 59, died after being pulled from a rip current at Sailors Haven on Saturday, Aug. 23, Suffolk County police previously announced. Vietnam Veteran Dies In Fire At Long Island Home
A Long Island veteran died after he was seriously injured in a house fire. Emergency crews in Middle Island were called shortly after 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, when flames broke out at the Lake Pointe apartment complex on Middle Country Road. Inside, firefighters located 79-year-old Arthur Ziomek. He was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
