Lirr Strike Over — But Tuesday Morning Commute Still A Traffic Disaster
Long Island Rail Road service was set to resume at 12 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, after a deal to end the LIRR workers' strike was reached Monday night, May 18, officials said.
Because negotiations stretched so late into the night, the LIRR remained closed for Tuesday morning rush hour, MTA boss Janno Lieber said at a press conference broadcast on WCBS.
“There are people who are reporting to work in this hour and in the hours to come to resume service,” Lieber said early Tuesday.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for parts of the Hudson Valley, New York City, and Long Island as a strengthening storm system could bring heavy snow and strong winds to the region late this weekend.
The National Weather Service in New York said the watch is in effect from Sunday morning, Feb. 22, through Monday afternoon, Feb. 23, for portions of southeast New York, including Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Westchester, New York City, and Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island.

Both directions of the Long Island Expressway will undergo overnight lane closures in the towns of Brookhaven, Islip, and Smithtown, beginning Tuesday night, Dec. 17.
In Brookhaven, the westbound left and HOV lanes of I-495 will close between exit 64 (State Route 112) and exit 62 (Nicholls Road) from 10 p.m. Tuesday until 5 a.m. the following morning, according to transportation officials.
