About 20,000 gallons of partially treated sewage was released into a Long Island waterway earlier this week because of a screw-up at a water treatment plant, officials said. The nasty liquid spilled into Reynolds Channel on Tuesday, May 19, mucking up the water between Long Beach and Island Park, according to News 12 Long Island. Six people were rescued from dangerous waters off Long Island Sound in Smithtown, Suffolk County police announced on Sunday, Aug. 10. A Long Island man died after being pulled from the water in Nissequogue, police said. Eric Soloff, 63, of Nissequogue, was found unresponsive off Long Beach Road on Sunday, June 8, around 6:41 p.m., according to the Suffolk County Police Department. Officers from the Fourth Precinct and the Marine Bureau had responded to a 911 call about a swimmer in distress. Soloff was pulled from the water a short time later, police said.
