A group of Long Island high school seniors put in the work and now they’re in the running for one of the most prestigious academic honors in the country. Hundreds of students from across Nassau and Suffolk counties were named as semifinalists in the 70th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. A 26-year-old man is accused of targeting a Long Island resident through an elaborate computer scam. Nassau County Police said an 82-year-old East Meadow man contacted detectives at around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, saying he had received a message on his computer from someone claiming to be an employee for Microsoft. The purported employee told the man that his bank accounts had been compromised and that he needed to withdraw all of his savings and “await further instructions” about where to send the funds. Trio Beats, Robs Customer After Luring Victim From Cedarhurst Jewelry Store, Police Say
A man hoping to sell a bracelet to a Long Island jewelry store was instead beaten and robbed. Nassau County Police said the 31-year-old victim called what he thought was Five Towns Jewelry Buyers, located in Cedarhurst on Willow Avenue, at around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11. He was told the business was undergoing renovations and that he should come to a house on Redwood Drive. Students At Kellenberg HS Forced To Wait Outside As Police Search For Bombs
Police on Long Island say the bomb threat made against a high school was a hoax. Kellenberg Memorial High School, at 1400 Glenn Curtiss Blvd., in Uniondale was alerted to the call just after 7 a.m., Nassau County authorities said. The call was made anonymously to the 988 Lifeline, a suicide and crisis hotline. The caller claimed to have planted bombs around the school grounds. Police and Homeland Security agents had teachers and students wait outside until they deemed the area safe. Officers are investigating who made the call.

Paint Poured On Pro-Israel Banner At Jewish Center In Searingtown
Police are searching for the person or persons responsible for pouring paint on banner expressing support for Israel at a Jewish center on Long Island. Nassau County Police say the incident happened on Friday, Aug, 30 at 9 p.m. in Searingtown. Officers responded to the Shelter Rock Jewish Center, located at 272 Shelter Rock Road for a report of criminal mischief. Tourists Spent Record-Breaking Amount On Long Island Last Year, Report Shows
It appears tourists just can’t get enough of Long Island. Travelers spent a record-breaking $7.5 billion across Nassau and Suffolk counties in 2023, according to data from New York State’s annual Tourism Economics report. That figure far surpassed 2022’s record-breaking spending of $6.6 billion by 12.7 percent. Tourists spent the most, 36 percent, on food and beverages, followed by lodging at 20 percent, the report found. Retail and service stations added another $1.2 billion, or 16 percent of total spend. State leaders are crediting major policing reforms for a marked decline in shootings across New York State.
