Work On New Tappan Zee Bridge Main Span Underway
ORANGETOWN, N.Y. -- Construction for the Tappan Zee Bridge's main span towers is now under way. Tappan Zee Constructors installed four pre-assembled sections of steel weighing 340,000 pounds each on top of the main span crossbeams in June. The segments will enable the TZC team to build out from the towers one section at a time and attach stay cables to the structure along the way this summer. The erected steel sections will receive precast concrete deck panels to provide a base driving surface. Click here for more information.

Court Upholds Mount Vernon Mayor Thomas' Executive Powers
MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- Acting state Supreme Court Justice Robert Neary has upheld Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas' executive powers in the case of Thomas v. Wallace. The court upheld Thomas' power to control the purse and sign checks and declined to review mayoral power over appointments. The Third Street Firehouse Emergency Operations Center issue has been returned to the city of Mount Vernon for evaluation. Learn To 'Decoupage' A Basket In Tarrytown
TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- The Harold and Elaine Shames JCC on the Hudson will host a basket decoupage event on Tuesday, July 19. Decoupage is a craft form involving pasting cutouts to an object, then covering them with several coats of varnish or lacquer to give cutouts an appearance of depth. It can also make pictures and patterns appear as if they are painted on the object. The workshop will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Materials will be provided. SUFFERN, N.Y. -- Happy birthday to Suffern's Joe Lockhart. Lockhart, who grew up in Suffern, turns 57 today. Best known as the former White House Press Secretary during the Bill Clinton administration, Lockhart also worked as press secretary for Walter Mondale, Paul Simon, and Michael Dukakis. Lockhart also served as a senior advisor to the presidential campaign of John Kerry and as spokesman for Facebook. He co-founded the consulting firm Glover Park Group.
