The shelter holds a "Home 'Fur' the Holidays" promotion each year to generate interest in their animals. However, they have to guard against impulse decisions from people looking for a quick gift.
"We want to make sure they're making a decision based on the fact that they do want a pet in their home, not, 'Let's just get it for Christmas," said Glory Bracken, director of advertising and fundraising for the shelter. "We don't do adoptions on Christmas Eve and we're closed Christmas Day."
For those who do adopt, the Home Fur the Holidays promotion sends animals to their new owners with a gift bag. The bag includes toys, dog biscuits, and canned or dried food, Bracken said.
"It's been very helpful," she told Daily Voice. "Even for people who can't adopt, we get a lot of people making donations."
Every adopter also has a chance to win a Petco gift card.
The promotion helped four dogs and eight cats find new homes, Bracken said. It continues until Jan. 3.
The shelter used other holidays to help its animals, such as the Black Friday black cat event. Black cats are often the least adopted, Bracken said, but by giving them special attention 16 found new owners, she said.
All of the adoptable animals received medical exams, inoculations and are spayed and neutered if they are 6 months or older, Bracken said.
