Highland Economic Development and Tourism Corp, or HEAT, sponsored its second-annual Light Up West Milford decoration contest this month.
Residents and business owners can enter by sending a picture of their display to HEAT. The company's Facebook fans can then vote for their favorites by liking the pictures.
Paul Zarrillo, vice chairman of HEAT, said they've received a strong response and more than in 2014. The interest led them to extend the deadline to enter to Dec. 22.
"We try to bring some holiday spirit to the town," Zarrillo told Daily Voice. "It's been overall positive."
The contest winner receives a $500 cash prize. Last year there were enough prizes to go around that every entry won something, Zarrillo said.
The 2014 winning family was excited about the accomplishment, Zarrillo said. This year HEAT staff hope to present a check to the winner at a council meeting to help spread the word further about the contest, he said.
The contest goes beyond just holiday spirit, as Zarrillo said it also helps local business. Since the competition is open to residents and stores, he said it allows owners to promote their business as well.
