Kayaker Who Drowned In NJ Lake Wasn't Wearing Life Preserver, Investigators Say
Authorities have identified the Old Bridge man who drowned when his kayak capsized in Jackson Township. Search and rescue divers found the body of 29-year-old John Pereira in Prospertown Lake on Sunday, Aug. 4, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer said in a news release. He was first reported missing at around 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3. Witnesses told Jackson Township police that Pereira was not wearing a life preserver and they believed he drowned. A teen swimmer has died after being pulled from a notoriously dangerous and privately owned lake in Manchester Township. Victor Arias-Peralta, 18, of Perth Amboy drowned at Crystal Lake on Monday, July 29, the Manchester Township Police Department said in a news release. A 25-year-old woman was hospitalized after being bitten by a snake in Hunterdon County on Wednesday, July 24, authorities said. At 9:59 a.m., police responded to a report of an animal bite at a residence on County Road 519 in Kingwood Township, Jeffrey Lebron, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police said. Police found a 25-year-old woman who had sustained minor injuries from a snake bite and she was transported to an area hospital, Lebron said. The incident remains under investigation, Lebron said. Harmful Algae Bloom Halts Paddle Boating In Somerset County Park
Paddle boating has been put on hold due to the presence of harmful age blooms in a Somerset County park, authorities said. The Somerset County Park Commission said paddle boats are closed until further notice at Powder Mill Pond in Colonial Park. Exposure to harmful algae blooms can cause various illnesses including vomiting, diarrhea, confusion, seizures, permanent short term memory loss, or death, when consumed at high levels, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Science. Police in Blairstown are looking for a man wanted for a stabbing on Tuesday, June 2, authorities said. The suspect stabbed another man on Meadow Cliff Lane on a horse farm in Hardwick Township, Blairstown police said.
