A ship captain pleaded guilty to drugging and raping a U.S. Merchant Marine cadet during her course of study at the Long Island-based academy, authorities said.
John Merrone, 54, copped to five counts of aggravated sexual abuse, sexual abuse, and abusive sexual contact moments before his trial could start Wednesday, July 15 in federal court in Brooklyn, the Justice Department said.

HAZMAT: 8 Sickened By LA Fitness Chlorine Leak In North Brunswick
Eight people were hospitalized after a suspected chlorine leak at an LA Fitness in North Brunswick on Thursday, July 16, police said.
Police, firefighters, EMS crews, and the Middlesex County Haz-Mat Team responded to the Brunswick Shopping Center, where early indications indicated a chlorine leak that has since been contained, Deputy North Brunswick Police Chief Brian A. Hoiberg said.
Eight people were injured and transported to area hospitals, according to Hoiberg.
