Homeless Ex-Con Charged With Assaulting McDonald's Worker In Englewood Over A Soda
A homeless ex-con grabbed a counter worker at a McDonald's in Englewood around the neck when she wouldn't give him a free soda, authorities said.
Walter Alston, 33, walked behind the counter of the West Palisade Avenue fast-food joint and demanded the drink, then assaulted the mid-30s employee when she refused, poured one for himself and left, Police Lt. Fred Pulice said.
The employee wasn't seriously injured, he said.
Alston, formerly of Lodi, has been known to police for just about all of his adult life, mostly for arrests involving assaults, thefts and other offenses from a decade or so…
ONE Year Later: Englewood Man Who Went Missing Still Hasn't Been Found
SEEN HIM? The search continued for a lifelong Englewood resident with dementia who went missing a year ago Thursday.
Ruben Wilson, 69, had wandered off from his home near Cross Street and West Palisade Avenue before.
He's been known, in fact, "to travel significant distances despite his age and other challenges,” Detective Capt. Timothy Torell said.
The 6-foot, 240-pound Wilson has always turned up -- from as close as Teaneck, Hackensack and Tenafly, and as far as Wall Township.
That changed after Wilson went missing on May 27, 2020, just weeks after a previous walkaway.

Two responding officers quickly administered first aid, while two colleagues found Ernesto Dominguez-Hortelano, 37, hiding in a shed attached to a garage on the block behind the victim's home.

Englewood's business district was busy when a brazen robber held up the newly-opened Rita's Italian Ice shop -- in full view of surveillance cameras.
Wearing a hoodie and shorts, the robber entered the shop on bustling West Palisade Avenue around 1:15 p.m. Saturday carrying a large knife, Detective Capt. Tim Torell said.
"He jumped over the counter, demanded money, then forced the register open, grabbed a handful of cash and took off," Torell said.
The owner, who came out from in back, briefly scuffled with the robber, who broke free before stumbling on the way out and dropping t…
