NJ Man Arrested For Selling Heroin, Coke Hours After Parole Release Under Murphy COVID Law
A Sussex County man was arrested for selling heroin and crack cocaine, just hours after being released from parole supervision last week, authorities said.
Leighton A. Brown, 42, of Newton, was arrested at his home last Wednesday, and charged with distribution of heroin and crack cocaine, as well as selling CDS within 1,000 feet of a school zone, police said.
Brown was released from parole supervision on Nov. 4, under Gov. Murphy’s COVID-19 law that reduced and ended parole time, police said.
He was being held at Morris County Jail in accordance with the Criminal Justice Reform Act.

Hackensack PD: Police Flood Neighborhood, Capture Fleeing NYC Parolees
Hackensack police grabbed two Brooklyn parolees who tried to flee a Monday afternoon traffic stop, authorities said.
Narcotics detectives smelled raw pot after stopping their vehicle at the corner of Prospect and Poplar avenues shortly after 2:30 p.m., Detective Capt. Darrin DeWitt said.
The driver, Marquis Fleming, 24, at first complied with investigators and got out of the car, DeWitt said.
Suddenly, his passenger – identified as 27-year-old Gerald Russell – took off on foot, the captain said.

Shooter Shook Hands With His Victim Before Killing Him In Newark
A Newark man pleaded guilty to aggravated manslaughter in the death of another city man outside an illegal gambling parlor two years ago, the Essex County Prosecutor's Office said Thursday.
Robert Steele, 27, and 28-year-old Hydee Wryce were both placing bets at the parlor, in the 100 block of Littleton Avenue, on the morning of Oct. 29, 2017.
Wryce was inside his vehicle, which was parked in front of the parlor, when Steele went to his car parked nearby, got a gun, and put it in the front pocket of his hooded sweatshirt.

Wannabe Hitman Gets 20 Years For Attempted Murder In W. Orange
A 23-year-old Edison man who shot at a West Orange resident and claimed there was a “bounty” on the victim was sentenced this week to 20 years in prison, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.
On Sept. 22, 2016, the victim returned to his Lowell Place home from his daughter’s back-to-school night when John Searles, who was wearing a ski mask, emerged from the driveway and ran towards him, firing multiple shots. The victim was not hit.
