A newly-implemented policy in Newark requiring all firefighters respond to life-threatening calls paid off big time Saturday. Firefighters who otherwise may not have responded to the crash at Elizabeth Avenue and W. Peddie Street were able to revive one of the drivers. A Newark firefighter suffered second-degree burns battling a blaze in the rectory of a historic church after police noticed smoke coming from the building. Police body camera footage shows Newark officers rescuing a 76-year-old resident from a 2-alarm weekend fire that left four families homeless. Firefighters Responding To Newark Kitchen Fire Find Children Living With Insects
Newark firefighters responding to a kitchen fire found something much worse: Bugs and filth. The Newark Fire Division called code enforcement to the first floor of the house on the 800 block of 19th Street, for the presence of children and insects around 12:50 a.m. Wednesday, a city spokeswoman said. Ten residents were evacuated in the fire. A fire inspection and investigation remain ongoing.

Fire Breaks Out At Newark Funeral Home
Firefighters put out a blaze at a Newark funeral home Wednesday. Sixty members of the Newark Fire Division responded to the Churchman Funeral Home on 13th Avenue around 12:45 p.m., Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said. The fire started on the building’s second floor and extended to its third floor, according to Amrbose, and was under control by 1:10 p.m. No injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation.
