Two Critically Burned Victims Rescued After Porch Candle Ignites Maplewood House Blaze
UPDATE: Two men were clinging to life with critical burns after firefighters rescued them from an overnight blaze that engulfed a Maplewood home. The two-alarm fire broke out on a porch of the 2½-story wood-frame house on Essex Avenue, trapping three residents inside, around 3:20 a.m., responders said. A candle left burning on the front porch apparently was to blame, fire officials said. Police were first on the scene and got an elderly woman out, they said. A fast-moving fire destroyed a Garfield apartment building before dawn Thursday. The general-alarm blaze broke out at the 91 Jewell Street Apartments around 1:30 a.m. and quickly consumed the top floor and roof of the three-story multi-family building. Garfield police forced their way in and got all residents to safety, Police Capt. Richard Uram said. One resident was hospitalized with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening. Massive Fire Consumes South Jersey Strip Mall
Firefighters battled a massive blaze Friday that consumed a strip mall in Cherry Hill. There was no immediate word on what might have caused the blaze, which broke out at a business in the shopping center and sent flames into the air shortly before 11 a.m. Several ladder trucks were in operation after the roof of the structure collapsed, followed soon after by huge portions of the facade. An Elmwood Park multi-family home went up in flames Saturday night. Responders were met by flames and heavy smoke at the Fournier Crescent home just after 8:30 p.m. Hoarding conditions contributed to the extent of the two-alarm fire, which quickly spread to the attic, they said. 36 Displaced In Jersey City Fire
A car fire spread to a two-story home displacing 36 people early Wednesday morning, fire officials said. Firefighters responded to the multi-alarm blaze at the 400 block of Mercer Street around 3:30 a.m. The blaze spread across an alleyway to neighboring homes, affecting 10 families. A landlord who failed to follow state codes was sentenced Friday to a plea-bargained three years in state prison for a 2016 fire that killed a 5-year-old Little Ferry girl and her grandmother. UPDATE: With help from a sprinkler system and colleagues from other towns, Ridgefield Park firefighters doused a warehouse blaze Wednesday night. The fire was reported around 5:45 p.m. after someone working at the Industrial Avenue building heard a popping sound and saw smoke, responders said. The blaze quickly went to three alarms, with two more for coverage, they said. Nearly two dozen people were displaced in a fire at a three-story house in Elizabeth overnight New Year's Eve. Flames were shooting through the walls of 163 Westfield Ave., when firefighters responded around 4 a.m., reports say. One resident said that someone had been shooting off fireworks on an upstairs level of the home just before the fire broke out. Firefighters were ordered out of the house when smoke and fire began engulfing the house, bringing the blaze to a third alarm, reports say. The house was deemed untenable, and nearly two dozen people were displaced.

Thanks to Passaic police, firefighters and tenants themselves, no one was injured in a suspicious Sunday morning apartment building fire that sent flames through the roof, authorities said. Ramsey firefighters doused separate mini-blazes sparked Monday by downed utility lines blocks apart. Burning wires fell on Lake Street at Franklin Turnpike in front of Eastwick College and on Canterbury Drive, spreading to some brush. PSE&G shut down power to the area so that firefighters could extinguish the blazes. Small Fire At New Milford Nursing Home Forces Evacuation; Staffers Hospitalized
The residents of a New Milford care facility were safely removed after a small but smoky fire broke out Thursday morning, Chief of Police Brian Clancy said. Police responded to Woodcrest Center Care One on River Road at about 9 a.m. on a report of fire on the second floor.
