Director Of Fair Lawn Early Learning Center Helps Police Find Parents Of Wandering Toddler
A Fair Lawn toddler found wandering alone wasn't able to help police find his parents -- but the director of a local early learning center was, authorities said. Confusion between the parents and the boy’s grandmother over who was watching him left him wandering alone around dinnertime Monday, Sgt. Brian Metzler said Tuesday. Police were called after he was found on Westmoreland Avenue around 5:30 p.m., Metzler said. Because the boy was non-verbal -- and no one had reported him missing -- police had a mystery on their hands. So they went to Jessica DeMott, director of the Lightbridge Acad…

Stalker Nabbed By Detectives Trying To Lure Clifton Girl, 13, For Sixth Time, Authorities Say
Clifton detectives who were watching rushed a 37-year-old city man as he tried luring a 13-year-old middle student into his car, authorities said Friday. It was no fewer than the sixth time that he’d approached the same girl, they said. The Christopher Columbus Middle School student told school officials that Samer K. Alamad of Clifton parked his car nearby as she walked to school the morning of April 22 and asked if she needed a ride, Police Lt. Robert Bracken said. School resource officers who investigated “learned that this was not the first time,” Bracken said. “In fact, it was determi…

Police Warn Parents Of Location Sharing 'Mappen' App
Local police are warning parents of a new social media platform and smartphone app that is apparently aggressive in its quest to get users to share locations with contacts. Mappen's description in the App Store reads: “SEE WHERE YOUR FRIENDS ARE AND MEET UP. Mappen helps you plan your social life by showing you where friends are and what they’re doing so you can get together.” The app only shares users' locations with friends, but often asks for access to all contacts to be added as friends. Chester police -- and several other agencies -- are urging parents to talk to children about …

Hillsdale Schools Chief: Perceived Threat To Middle School Deemed Harmless
What a Hillsdale middle schooler considered a threat was deemed "non-specific and not credible" by borough police and county prosecutor's detectives, authorities said Monday. The seeds of the incident were sown last week when someone began sharing an inappropriate photo of a girl that made its way to some students, parents said. “The girl has ties to someone in Hillsdale, so some of the kids know her,” one said. District officials asked parents following the incident to talk with their children about blocking and preventing “the transmission of inappropriate pictures,” Schools Supt. R…

Authorities Seek Public Help Probing Reports That Men Tried To Lure Elmwood Park Girls Into Van
Authorities turned to the public for help in investigating reports by two Elmwood Park middle school students that they were approached by two men in the same minivan on separate days asking them if they wanted rides. “You’re beautiful. Do you want me to drop you off?” one of the men reportedly asked each girl – one 11, the other 12. The first incident occurred on Tuesday, the other on Wednesday, both around 4 p.m. on Gilbert Avenue between Speidel Avenue and Elm Street, Police Chief Michael Foligno said. Police Warn Parents Of Bogus Text -- With Blatant Typo -- Telling Girls To Run Away From Home
It bears a blatant typo, but Saddle River police – just to be sure – are warning parents about a bogus text message apparently sent to young girls telling them to run away from home. “STOP WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND RUN AWAY FROM HOME!” the text says. “Bad pleople are after you.” Yes, the bogus text -- which bears a Dallas area code -- says “pleople.” “Looks like someone didn't make it to spelling bee,” a Facebook user commented. “Girl please ... this looks so obviously fake,” one wrote. “Maybe not to a younger girl,” another responded. “Please speak with your children about this message a…

Paramus Buy Buy Baby Donates Car Seat To Toddler With Heart Defect
MaryAnn LaBarbiera of Paramus was fully prepared last month to host an ailing Filipino baby and his mother. Or so she thought. The very day baby Lucas and his mom Ana Mallaria were arriving in the U.S. for life changing heart surgery, however, Paramus Police Sergeant Brian Linden spotted a problem. The car seat. It was outdated. Unsafe. Downright dangerous. Linden wanted to be sure that almost-2-year-old Lucas -- who was being sponsored by the Paramus Rotary Club through the Gift of Life program -- would be as safe as possible during his three-week stay in the U.S. That meant a safe car…
