: Saddle River Police Sergeant, Officer Douse Growing House Fire
Smoke rolled out the front door as Saddle River Police Sgt. Diana Golonek and Officer Grant Novak arrived at a house fire just before midnight Thursday. The living-room blaze was beginning to cook, leaving the pair little time. Golonek emptied two fire extinguishers on the flames while Novak opened a garden hose he'd pulled through an open French door of the 5,000-square-foot house on tiny dead-ended Dogwood Drive late on June 28. Together, they beat back the flames and had the blaze knocked down by the time borough firefighters arrived. The residents got out OK and no injuries were repor…

Ramsey Firefighters Contain Pre-Dawn Garage Blaze
Ramsey firefighters contained a pre-dawn attached garage blaze Tuesday before it extended into the home. The Elbert Street house sustained some smoke damage after firefighters pulled down the wall and ceiling of an adjoining bathroom to be sure the flames hadn't spread. No one was hurt in the 5:30 a.m. two-alarm blaze, which responders said was doused in a half hour or so. The cause hadn't officially been declared. Allendale and Mahwah firefighters joined their Ramsey colleagues, who included Ramsey Rescue. Borough police and EMS also responded. It was the second working fire in a little…

Allendale Rescuers Free Nurse After Jeep Tumbles Down Embankment
A nurse headed to work at an Allendale nursing home escaped with nothing more than an arm injury early Friday after her Jeep tumbled down an embankment and landed on its side in a few inches of water, police said. The 42-year-old RN from Ridgewood was still in her scrubs, a stethoscope around her neck, when Allendale firefighters removed part of the roof and got her to safety after the 7:20 a.m. crash, responders said. Elexis D. Friedrich said she was headed into work at the Allendale Community for Senior Living near southbound Route 17 when the crash occurred in the parking lot. After th…

Ramsey Gas Station Blaze: Driver, 44, OK After Car Plows Through Pumps
A 44-year-old driver walked away unscathed early Sunday after her Mercedes barreled over gas pumps and crashed into a Ramsey service station, igniting a fully-involved fire. The Delta station on Franklin Turnpike just off southbound Route 17 had been the site of KC’s Kustom Auto Services, operated by 49-year-old Kasey "KC" Checke, who died in a motorcycle crash in Hawthorne earlier this summer. It was taken over by his wife, Tracy Clemente Checke. "No one was hurt," she wrote on Facebook just before noon. "Most of our stuff was out of the shop, but doesn't make it…

4 Feet High & Rising: Allendale Firefighters Rescue Driver From Floodwaters
A pair of wet-suited Allendale firefighters rescued a motorist who was trapped in her car with water up to her driver’s side window -- and rising -- during Tuesday’s storm. An SUV driver had backed out as police reached the West Crescent Avenue underpass near the Myrtle Avenue intersection, Police Chief George Scherb said. A 62-year-old Florida, NY driver was stuck, however, with the waterline rising four feet to handles of her sedan, Scherb said. An officer summoned firefighters as the water continued to rise. After first throwing her a rope and telling her to keep calm, the firefighters…
