Bill Fearon of Cedar Grove had been working as a State Trooper for more than two decades, and spent time volunteering at Ground Zero following 9/11.
He was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor in May 2015, which he contracted while serving in the line of duty, according to a tribute that the NJ State Police posted on Facebook.
Three days after his diagnosis, Fearon underwent surgery and fought his battle up until Dec. 28.
"Even during this difficult time, Bill maintained his sense of humor, positive attitude and can-do spirit," the Facebook post said.
"Bill put it best when he stated, 'Every day I put my feet on the ground and I look forward to winning. This is the mindset that I have, it’s about living without fear.'"
More than $60,000 had been raised as of Thursday on a GoFundMe for Fearon, a father of three.
Fearon was a proud member of the 114th State Police class, and graduated in September 1994.
He served his entire career with distinction in numerous roles within the Division’s Field Operations Section, including Troops B and D, NJ Police said.
Fearon is survived by his wife, Janice, and their three children, Ryan, Elyse and Jessie.
