Wayne PD: Passenger With Pot Busted While Driver Argues Over Turn Signals

WAYNE, N.J. -- A Wayne man awaiting trial after police charged him with crashing two stolen cars and then stealing a bicycle was busted for drugs after the driver he was with told officers who stopped his commercial van that he was legally using hand signals to turn because the indicators were broken.

As the driver argued with the Wayne officers -- at one point dialing 911 on his cellphone, demanding that NJ State Police respond to the Hamburg Turnpike traffic stop -- they detected the smell of marijuana from the passenger, 26-year-old Michael Giaquinto, Capt. Laurence Martin said.

A search turned up some of the drug, Martin said.

Giaqunito was processed and taken to the Passaic County Jail pending a detention hearing on charges of drug possession and throwing objects from a motor vehicle, the captain said.

The driver was issued a summons for failing to use his turn signals and having an obstructed view.
