Officer Mark Ciaviarella was conducting pre-dawn safety and security patrols of the commercial district along northbound Route 23 when the 2007 Lexus came barreling down the highway in the center lane, high beams on, Capt. Laurence Martin said.
Ciaviarella had to steer out of its way, then pulled the car over, Martin said.
The driver, 28-year-old Kevin Williams of Paterson, "had no identification on him and originally provided false names" to the officer and his backups, the captain said.
"He did state that he recently was released from Rikers Island NYC correctional institution and was a registered member of the Grape Street Crips," Martin said.
