Video removed from story about boy, 15, injured in zip line fall in Glen Rock

A PUBLISHER WRITES: After mulling it much of the day, I removed a grainy, distant video of a Hawthorne teen falling 30 or so feet from a zip line behind Glen Rock High School and deleted it from the CLIFFVIEW PILOT YouTube page.

My hope throughout the past day and a half has been with those citizens who want school officials to move immediately to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Whether that line should or shouldn’t have been there throughout summer vacation — and what was done to secure it — are extremely important public safety issues. To not discuss it openly would be irresponsible. So keeping the story public is critical.

I feel for the youngster. It saddens me that he’ll have to spend what can be such a wonderful time in life healing — both physically and emotionally.

But we are also a collective, brothers and sisters, friends and neighbors and fellow citizens. To try and hide what happened, in an effort to protect the teen, in the end would be selfish.

The photos in the story show the location of the line, which is what matters here. One look and you don’t have to see a video to know what a terrible experience that must have been for the teen and those who witnessed it.

Neither the boy nor his family are named in the piece. There are no personal identifiers other than his age and hometown.

Hopefully what we all seek is accomplished — that is: protection not just for this boy but for all other kids who might be susceptible to the same temptation.
