Sheriff: Mom Dimes Out Heroin-Selling Son After Paterson Chase

A Paterson mom snitched on her drug-dealing son after he tried hiding from detectives who’d seen him toss 450 bags of heroin during a foot chase, Passaic County Sheriff Richard H. Bernik said.

Another man was arrested, as well, when he tried blocking the sheriff’s officers while repeatedly cursing at them, Berdnik said.

Members of his narcotics bureau had seen 22-year-old Marquis L. Wedderburn park a Kia sedan near the dead end of East 31st Street, the sheriff said.

Wedderburn left the car running as he got out, he said, then approached another vehicle at the intersection of 14th Avenue.

While fumbling with his keys, Wedderburn dropped a bundle of heroin – and the detectives came after him, Berdnik said.

Wedderburn bolted, tossing several bricks as he ran that contained hundreds of glassine folds of heroin worth a combined $3,200 on the street, the sheriff added.

After losing him, the detectives went to Wedderburn’s 15th Avenue home, accompanied by uniformed officers.

They were met by 27-year-old Orret T. McBean, who “responded with aggressive gestures and attempted to humiliate the officers in public,” Berdnik said.

McBean “shouted multiple times that Wedderburn was not in the residence and proceeded to scream a battery of expletives at the officers,” so they took him into custody on hindering/harboring charges, the sheriff said.

Wedderburn’s mother came out moments later and escorted the officers inside her home, where they found their suspect in the living room.

They arrested him without incident, the sheriff said.

McBean was released pending a court hearing.

Wedderburn, meanwhile, was sent to the Passaic County Jail on various drug-related charges, as well as for resisting arrest.
