"Residents in the 200 block of Ackerman Avenue awoke to hearing their doorbell ringing numerous times" before dawn Saturday, Lt. Robert Bracken said.

The elderly woman answered the door and was pushed inside by a robber armed with a knife who demanded cash, Bracken said.

Family members came to her aid as the robber forced him way into several rooms before fleeing, the lieutenant said.

It wasn't immediately clear what, if anything, he took.

No one was injured, Bracken added.

Family members described the intruder as Hispanic, apparently of Mexican descent, in his 30s or 40s, with a stocky build.
