The victim was taken to St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center after the shooting around 8:10 p.m. at Montgomery and Summer streets, Police Director Jerry Speziale said.

Detectives Francisco Brito and Salvatore Marotta of the Ceasefire Unit investigated and soon after identified Tommie Pulliam, 26, as the shooter, Speziale said.

They tracked down Pulliam with help from his parole officer and charged him with attempted murder and weapons offenses, he said.

Pulliam -- who served two years in state prison for aggravated assault, reckless manslaughter and a weapons conviction -- remained held in the Passaic County Jail pending an initial court appearrance.
